The Inhumane Treatment of Tigran Gambaryan by the Nigerian Government

Binance CEO Richard Teng has taken a strong stance against the Nigerian government’s treatment of Tigran Gambaryan, an American executive who has been detained since February. Teng expressed his concerns in a post on X, where he condemned the harsh treatment that Gambaryan has been subjected to. In particular, Teng highlighted a viral video that showed Gambaryan struggling to walk into a courtroom and called for an end to the inhumane treatment.

The viral video depicted Gambaryan limping into an Abuja courtroom on September 2nd, visibly in pain. Despite his clear need for assistance, prison authorities denied his request for a wheelchair, leaving him to drag his left leg behind him. Even attempts to seek support from a correctional officer were rejected, forcing him to rely on a single crutch. This denial of basic amenities drew criticism and sparked outrage, as Gambaryan expressed his frustration at the lack of assistance and the unjust treatment he was receiving.

Reports indicated that Gambaryan’s health has deteriorated significantly during his time in Nigerian custody, a concern that has been echoed by his family. His legal team filed a new bail application on medical grounds, citing various health conditions that he developed while in prison. These conditions included malaria, pneumonia, tonsillitis, and a herniated disc that caused severe pain and limited his mobility. Despite the urgent need for medical treatment, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) opposed the bail request, claiming that Gambaryan’s health was not in jeopardy. The legal battle continues, with the judge eventually granting Gambaryan permission to use a wheelchair, but the case is set to continue on September 4th.

The treatment of Tigran Gambaryan by the Nigerian government has raised serious human rights concerns and sparked outrage among observers. The denial of basic amenities, lack of medical care, and overall mistreatment have shed light on the injustices faced by individuals in custody. As the legal battle continues, it is imperative that Gambaryan’s rights and well-being are prioritized, and that he is granted the necessary medical attention and support he urgently needs.
