In the wake of the devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey on February 6, the Binance Women in Technology Academy, in partnership with the Women in Technology Association (Wtech), has made a significant shift in its focus towards providing support to the earthquake-affected province of Hatay in southern Turkey. The Academy recently organized a two-day program on March 26-27 in Hatay’s Antakya district, with the aim of empowering young female university students in the region. The program was designed to equip these women with essential skills and knowledge needed to navigate the Web3 world, covering topics such as financial literacy, blockchain technology, artificial intelligence, NFTs, and cybersecurity.
The broader mission of the Binance Women in Technology Academy is to increase women’s representation in the fields of crypto, blockchain, and Web3. By doing so, the Academy aims to enhance Turkey’s technological and economic standing while simultaneously combating gender inequality within the industry. Launched in early 2024, the Academy recently celebrated the graduation of its first cohort, marking a significant milestone in its efforts to introduce young women to the world of technology and empower them with the skills needed to excel in their careers and make a difference within their communities.
Zehra Öney, the Founding Chair of the Women in Technology Association, highlighted the association’s commitment to training competent individuals in technology and increasing the participation of women in the workforce, production processes, and entrepreneurship. The decision to shift the focus of the program to Hatay following the earthquake, welcoming 80 female university students, demonstrates a dedication to providing both immediate disaster relief and long-term educational opportunities for women in the region.
During the recent graduation ceremony, Harika Eldoğan, Binance’s Marketing Director for Turkey, shared the Academy’s ambitious goal of educating 5,000 women over the next five years. She emphasized the importance of expanding the technological ecosystem in Turkey and the significance of including young people and women in this process. Eldoğan stressed the importance of supporting women in exploring new opportunities for financial freedom and fostering their growth in these areas.
